Olympic 200-metre champion Veronica Campbell is back and is fast again. The Jamaican sizzled to wind-aided 22.39-seconds to capture the women’s 200m dash at the John McDonnell Invitational in Fayetteville, Arkansas, on Saturday.
Despite the assistance of the tail-wind, Campbell out-classed her rivals and looked much like the phenomenon sprinter, who was the most decorated female athlete at the 2004 Olympics in Athens, Greece.
Aided by a +2.7 m/s wind on her former University home track, Campbell sped home ahead of Latonia Wilson and Yolanda Goff, who were left at a distant 22.80 and 23.36, respectively for second and third.
After picking up second behind country woman Sherone Simpson in the 200m at the Commonwealth Games in Australia last March, Campbell suffered a quad injury and was sidelined for a large portion of the outdoor season.
She opened her 2007 season with a 4x400m relay leg on March 24.
American Wallace Spearmon won the men’s race in the fastest time in all conditions this season with a time of 19.87. He was aided by a +2.2 metre-per-second wind.
Elsewhere on Saturday, Jamaican Sanjay Ayre clocked 45.37 to finish second to World and Olympic champion Jeremy Wariner (USA) in the men’s 400m at the Michael Johnson Classic, held at the Hart / Patterson track and field complex at Baylor University.
Bahamian Andrae Williams posted 46.53 to take fourth place.
