I am fully aware of the fact that prevention is far better than a cure here, but once the damage is done, what do you/can you do to ease the sting and heat?

Aloe vera gel is the normal after burn treatment. They normally sell it in a gel and a gel spray these days. There are other after sun treatments but Aloe is pretty inexpensive and effective. Also some pain killer if the burn is really bad.

They also sell an aleo vera with lidocaine (topical anesthetic) which helps with the immediate pain as well. It comes in a blue gel pump as opposed to the normal clear or green aloe gel. It sprays on nice too.

You know if you can't get the gel or lotions or stuff locally, you can use the juice from a leaf directly. Chilling the leaf in the fridge makes it feel really, really nice when you cut it and wipe it on.

The rest of the leaf can just go in a plastic bag and go back in the fridge.

I always feel sticky when using the leaf. I've found throwing it into the food processor works well though. You can smoosh the entire leaf and just stick it into a covered cup or bowl for later. Putting it in the fridge is heaven. I do that with my body spray and facial toner in the summer. Its heaven to spray on something cool or wipe down your face with a cool cotton ball.

I've never seen the leaves or plants on sale, and wouldn't know what they looked like even. I ended up with some Soltan aftersun, and it took the sting away a little. I'll look for a plant next time I hit up Asda.
