I don't live in a nice area so I train on hiking trails. The surface isn't exactly smooth like a running track. Is this going to have a large effect on my running elsewhere?

I would think it would help with your running on a smoother track since you presumably run well on the rough terrain you would run better when you were on good terrain. Kind of like running in sand or water to get more resistance.

I hadn't really though of it like that. All I know is its a constant pain to have to pay attention to where I am stepping to not trip or get eaten by a wild animal. ;)

I would hope that it wouldn't matter. You might find though that if the ground isn't exactly level or flat that you are still compensating when on the track. That might cost a little bit of time.
